Trump is Awful. Is the alternative worse?

A response to “Every Major Reason to Fire Trump in November”

https://medium.com/discourse/every-major-reason-to-fire-trump-in-november-a-cheat-sheet-52687134fab7

I very much enjoy your past articles and expect to continue to do so going forward. You’re a fascinating, intelligent person of the type I would likely befriend in real life. I clicked on the notification to read this article, as I hoped to challenge my current beliefs that Joe Biden has little to offer this country.

And okay, it would be deliciously ironic for the American people to say “Donald, you’re FIRED!”.

Unfortunately, this rant is just not up to par with your other work, I’m afraid.

How can the left not see that Trump’s public persona is a calculated, manufactured sideshow distraction manufactured to bait leftists into showing their true colors? The secret is out. His supporters know he’s just taunting the left and talking nonsense about stuff that conservatives just don’t care about and over media channels in which half of the country has abandoned all hope of objectivity and respectful inclusion of political differences.

I’m not saying that he is not a narcissist, or a liar, or corrupt, or in some cases genuinely incompetent. I’m just saying you are beating the drum of a toxic Democratic party leadership that hasn’t recovered from a hard swing to the left during the Obama years.

Don’t get distracted by the sideshow.

He’s actually sharking you. He’s crazy-making you, and you’re falling for it. He says intentionally crazy shit, which triggers leftists to rant in ways that reinforce the alienation of the right half of this country, and some centrists too. He’s no genius and he is a lot of other bad things. But he’s making you shoot yourselves in the foot over, and over, and over again.

Trump’s intentionally exaggerated public persona could be the most successful experiment in reverse psychology in history. His right-wing supporters, and many of us centrists, judge him by his actions, not his words. And those actions are necessarily on the whole more pragmatic, and centrist, and responsive than the smokescreen.

I really don’t want to vote for Trump. My beefs with the right-wing are as many and every bit as serious. Carbon emissions and pollution in general. Bullying other nations for sport. Corporate welfare and corporate feudalism. Failing to stand up to the true racists on the party fringes. But my problem with Biden is a Democratic party that hasn’t “sobered up” from swinging far left. America simply doesn’t need more socialism. What else does the Democratic party have left to offer? Where’s the upside?

As long as the far left continues bashing the very foundation of our country, sovereignty of the individual, the rule of law, demonizing the very police who overwhelmingly do their level best daily to protect Black (and all) lives, and sensationalizing inter-generational hatred and racism in a way that threatens to derail decades of grassroots progress in race relations in this country, I earnestly hope that whomever you support loses the election.

Having said my piece, my respect for you as an intelligent person and a talented writer is unfazed. I look forward to reading more great articles from you.
