Workplace Inequality

Workplace Inequality, also known as Occupational inequality stems from gender inequality and has the same characteristics as gender inequality, but is focused within a workplace environment.

According to studies and EqualRights.org:

The first response that stood out to me is that nearly 57% of the responses do not believe that men and women have the same rights in this country, while 12.3% of the responses answered maybe to the question. That means that 69.2% of the total number of responses believe that in some way men and women are not equal in the country.

Looking at this issue on a smaller scale I focus on the relationship between men and women in the workplace. When asked the question “Do you think gender inequality exists in the workplace?” 87.7% of the participants answered Yes.

So how did we get here?

We can start with the gender pay gap. According to PayScale.com,

Given the research there is evidence of a pay gap between genders, and it is decreasing but at a very low rate. When asked the question “Do you believe there is a gender pay gap?” 83.8% of the participants answered Yes, while 10.8% answered Not Sure. This is just a small factor in why 87.7% of the participants believe gender inequality still exists in the workplace.

I asked a question in the survey that required each participant to self reflect on their actions against gender inequality in the work place:

60 participants answered the question with “Neutral”, 39 participants answered “Agree”, 18 answered “Strongly Agree”. So why would the majority of the participants answer Neutral? What does neutral even mean in this scenario?

Looking at the results from all the questions on the survey I believe that too many people know gender inequality exists especially in the workplace, have experienced it, and want to do something about it; but there is still a stigma around talking about this topic.

This is the reason why I wanted to focus on this issue; to bring it in the spotlight and get people thinking about their actions towards this topic allows them to make a change. Whether it is to just stop and think about gender inequality, or to hold yourself accountable for the environment you create in your workplace, it is a good start, because after all, it is a start.
