Electric Vehicles In New York City

Looking at costs for vehicles over time is what many fleet vehicle providers take into consideration when choosing which vehicle to go with. The lifetime cost of a vehicle includes the cost of maintenance, gas, and other things that go into maintaining a vehicle over time. For this reason, New York City is eyeing up electric vehicles due to the fact that many of them require lower lifetime costs. The lower cost of electricity over gasoline and the lower repair costs due to simpler motors are the highlights that NYC is seeing as the defining factor in this decision.

New York City has given the numbers behind the costs for their fleet vehicles in 2018. The data shows that over the year, electric vehicles and hybrid plug-in vehicles were significantly less than the fully gas vehicles. These numbers can be skewed due to the fact that the electric vehicles have not driven as many miles as the gas vehicles on the fleet, but the estimated costs of the electric vehicles are still much lower than its gas equivalents.

One of the vehicles that New York City tested was the Nissan Leaf, a fully all-electric vehicle. The cost of the Leaf outweighed Ford Fusion, another gas vehicle the city utilizes, but in the end, the overall cost of the Leaf saved the city almost $9k. These early numbers are showing New York that there are cleaner and cheaper ways to provide fleet services.
