I am a Christian in spite of you.

I am a Christian in spite of you. In spite of you who tried to tell me that God said to love your neighbor and then drew district lines around who counted. In spite of you who convinced me that God is love but only for a subgroup of humans. In spite of you who forgot that being created in his image applies to all of us not just the straight white ones of us.

I am a Christian in spite of you. In spite of you who became a judge. In spite of you who wrote a list of sins with a line between the normal ones and the really bad ones and called it Biblical. In spite of you, the ones who decided that making you uncomfortable was the equivalent of an affront to God himself.

I am a Christian in spite of you. In spite of you who decided women who dared to teach was a bigger problem than men who took advantage of children. In spite of you who use the pulpit to encourage hatred and divisiveness. In spite of you who love to point out the speck in the eye of the world while ignoring the log in your own eye.

I am a Christian in spite of you. In spite of you who want to force the world to bend to your beliefs through laws and call it “saving”. In spite of those of you who seek to follow in your ancestors footprints, the ones who came with sword and spears to rescue a people from their false Gods by sending them to meet them. In spite of you who use the Bible as a weapon to cut people down instead of a gift of love.

I am a Christian in spite of you. In spite of you who protest love based on your religion and endorse a liar based on the same one. In spite of you who see people different from you as less than human. In spite of you who sit silent in your pews content to allow hatred as long as it against a group that bothers your sensitivities.

I am a Christian in spite of you. In spite of you telling me I couldn’t be, that I didn’t belong and that I was an abobination. I am a Christian in spite of you. I am still a Christian despite your attempts to convince me that I couldn’t be, shouldn’t be. I am a Christian in the face of your efforts to get me to renounce the faith, to get me to leave, and to get me to cease polluting your world as someone guilty of such a “sin”.
