Keeping Up With the Joneses

An impossible task.

In the writing world, it seems like our peers are habitually writing something better, more creative, and thoughtful. Though the subject might be the same, they said it better, it flowed better, or sounded better than the piece you wrote last week.

But maybe that’s all in our heads. Just hear me out.

Being a writer is a creative art. I always knew this but didn’t quite understand what it meant until I read the different stories from the Creative Cafe Prompt.

My submission to The Creative Cafe was my second time participating in a prompt. Though I had read substantially different stories from the first prompt I contributed to at another publication, it was easier for me to put aside the magnitude of creativity provided by each participant because we were given only a single word. One word can have lots of meanings depending on the person.

It wasn’t until I wrote a prompt for The Creative Cafe and read other stories that the differences in each submission truly stunned me. How could one sentence evoke so many different stories depending on the reader/writer?

For example:
